TRINITY’S “PARENT ATHLETE” STORY:
“For most of my life, I have never been very athletic. Once I reached my thirties and had just had my second child, I needed a change. My metabolism had slowed greatly, I was exhausted all of the time, and I desperately needed some time to myself. I found that running was the perfect solution. I started the Couch-to-5k program about 6 months after my daughter was born. Nine weeks later, I ran my first 5k and I was hooked. I used the time I spent running to get some needed solitude, reflect, and unwind. And, I have found that registering for upcoming races keeps my motivation up as I am always ‘training’ for something. Once I realized that running is really more of a mental task than a physical one, the mind-over-matter philosophy started spilling over into everything I do. Shortly after completing that first 5k, I made the decision to return to college.
It has been about three years since I started running and I can say, without a doubt, it has changed my life. My children are now 3 and 5. I have just completed my second year at RIT, and I recently ran my first half marathon. I love the lessons my children learn from seeing me run. Watching me run races has showed them that you can do anything you set your mind to, that being active is fun, and, I think most importantly, that winning isn’t everything. I will probably never win any of the races I compete in; I do it because I love to run. I am always looking for a new challenge. I have completed one 5k obstacle race and recently started trail running. The Spartan Race is next on my ‘to do’ list. I would love to win an entry, and look forward to conquering it next year!”
